A working dam, not a natural lake
Embalse El Yeso is an artificial reservoir, created in 1964 by damming the Yeso River as it comes down out of the high Andes — one of the Maipo River's main tributaries, along with the El Volcan and Colorado rivers that also cut through this same canyon system. It holds roughly 250 million cubic metres of water and is one of the reservoirs that feeds the water supply for the Santiago Metropolitan Region — worth knowing before you assume it's simply a scenic alpine lake; it's also infrastructure, and access rules can change for reasons that have nothing to do with tourism.
Where the turquoise actually comes from
The colour is glacial flour — extremely fine rock particles ground down by glaciers further up the Yeso and Maipo valleys and carried into the reservoir in meltwater. The particles are small enough to stay suspended in the water rather than settling, and they scatter sunlight in a way that reads as that particular blue-green. It's the same mechanism behind the colour of glacier-fed lakes elsewhere in the Andes and the Alps, not a filter, a mineral tint, or anything added — stand at the shore and it looks exactly like the photographs.
The mountains around it
The reservoir sits in a bowl of bare, largely treeless peaks in the upper Cajon del Maipo, with the higher Andes and the snowline visible up-valley on a clear day. The canyon's best-known summits — San Jose volcano, at close to 5,900 metres and the most recently active in the group, and Maipo volcano further southeast on the border with Argentina — aren't directly visible from the shoreline, but the surrounding rock is the same high-Andean terrain they belong to, and the same volcanic activity that built them is part of why this valley looks the way it does.
The wind, and what it actually does
The reservoir sits in an exposed bowl above 2,000 metres with almost no tree cover, and the wind there is routinely stronger — and colder — than anything felt in Santiago that same morning. It tends to pick up through the middle of the day, which happens to be when most tours are at the shoreline for the picnic. A windproof layer is worth packing even when the Santiago forecast looks mild.
What you can and can't do at the water
This is a reservoir feeding a city's water supply, not a swimming beach — walking the shoreline and taking photographs is the standard activity, and operators don't typically build in swimming or boating. Treat the stop as a scenic and photographic one, with the picnic as the main event, rather than expecting water sports.
Marmolejo, and the peaks further up the valley
Continue up the same general drainage beyond the reservoir and the terrain leads toward Volcan Maipo and, further southeast, Marmolejo — at just over 6,000 metres, the most southerly peak of that height anywhere in the world. None of these summits sit directly on this tour's route, but they belong to the same high-Andean system the reservoir sits inside, and the scale of the bare rock around Embalse El Yeso is a small taste of the range this canyon eventually climbs into, for anyone who goes further than a day trip allows.
Why it isn't always the exact same shade
The precise turquoise varies with the season and even the week — more or less glacial meltwater feeding the reservoir changes how much rock flour stays suspended in the water, and the shade shifts through the summer melt season accordingly. A photo taken in late spring, thick with fresh meltwater, can look noticeably different from one taken in early autumn once the melt has slowed and settled. None of this is a flaw in the destination; it's the same natural process that makes the colour real in the first place, just not perfectly identical on every single visit.
